Ascorbic acid(vitamin c)
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that occurs in our food naturally…fortunately! Most of the animals are able to synthesize ascorbic acid in their body. It was first discovered in 1928 and is considered as an essential nutrient. Vitamin c also helps in fighting cancer during chemotherapy.
High Level of Vitamin C Kills Cancer:
In 1930 it was said that vitamin C could be used to combat cancer, but was considered a controversial idea. Recent research on mice shows that high dosage of vitamin C partially killed the cancer cells. But the idea of giving it as an oral medicine was failed.
An expert at UI has found that highly elevated vitamin C levels target and kill cancer cells. While leaving healthy cells in mice models. Experiments show that elevated level of vitamin C in human patients is safe and improves the results. He has also found that Vitamin C tends to break down easily, creating hydrogen peroxide which is known to destruct cells and DNA.Tumor cells cannot remove hydrogen peroxide, unlike healthy cells. Doctors in UI hospitals are trying the intravenous treatment combined with chemotherapy now, to see if this could increase survival in people or not. So let’s hope for the best!
Vitamin c and chemotherapy
Although the role that vitamin C plays in tumors is not yet identified, recent research shows that there may be some interaction between vitamin C and chemotherapy. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which can consume toxic substances and free radicals that can be formed as a result of chemotherapy agents to destroy cancer cells in the body. That seems a good news, though!
Vitamin C also kills mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is major cancer caused by asbestos exposure. This cancer affects pleural membrane of lungs and pericardial membrane.
It’s a major killer which affected more than 30,000 people in United states from 1999 to 2010.
According to few stats:-
More than 29,000 people died due to mesothelioma in the United States from 1999 to 2010. The number of deaths increased from more than 2,300 in 1999 to about 2,750 in 2010.
Not just United states of America it’s also deadly in countries like the United Kingdom. According to few reports
Mesothelioma was leading cause of deaths by cancer in United kingdom upto 2005.
Vitamin C initiates cell death and prevents the growth of the mesothelioma. When vitamin C breaks down it produces hydrogen peroxide that leads to tissue damage. Normal cells can remove peroxide, but cancerous cells cannot. This makes the cancer cells more prone to death when they hit with high doses of vitamin C. The healthy cells use catalase to decompose the vitamin and remove the hydrogen peroxide which keeps the cells healthy and undamaged. Cancerous cells, on the other hand, has the lower amount of catalase, making them more susceptible to death with high amounts of vitamin C.
Mesothelioma patients can increase survival and improve their quality of life by using this vitamin along with chemotherapy. It also helps to reduce toxicity produced by chemotherapy.
